Man accused of making Lockerbie bomb now in US custody

Now, the US has taken custody of the man who is accused of setting off the bomb that exploded on the Pan Am 103 flight above Lockerbie in 1988.

Abu Agila Mohammad Mas’ud Kheir al Marimi was said to be the “third conspirator”.

Mas’ud has been confirmed by the US Justice Department as being in custody. He will appear in Washington DC federal court for the first time.

It is unclear when he will make an appearance.

It is still the most deadly terror attack on British soil.

Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi was the only one to be convicted for the atrocity. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2001, and was released on compassionate grounds in 2009. He died in 2012.

According to the Scottish authorities, “The families of Lockerbie victims have been informed that Abu Agila Mohammad Mas’ud Kheir al Marimi has been taken into custody by the United States.”

“Scottish prosecutors, police and the US will continue to investigate this case, in collaboration with US colleagues and the UK government. The sole purpose of the investigation is to bring those who acted with al Megrahi and others to justice.”

Appeal against the conviction of al-Megrahi dismissed

William Barr, the US attorney General, charged Mas’ud with being the third person in the terrorist attack in 2020.

He was believed to be in Libyan custody at the time. Mr Barr stated that US authorities would work “arm-in-arm” with their Scottish counterparts.

Barr stated, “Let there not be any mistake, no matter how far or time away the US and our Scottish counterparts will stop them from seeking justice in this case,”
