NBC News projects that Raphael Warnock, Democrat, has been reelected to the US Senate. This is a significant win for President Joe Biden.
After two years of a 50-50 split, his expected win gives Democrats an outright majority at the Senate. Vice President Kamala Harris cast tie-breaking votes.
Mr Warnock defeated Republican rival Herschel Walk during the Georgia race. He is a former NFL star.
Because neither candidate had won an absolute majority in the midterm elections last month, a run-off election was called.
In his victory speech, Mr Warnock stated that he had spoken to supporters “after a hard-fought campaign or campaigns. It is my honor to utter the four strongest words ever spoken in democracy: The people have spoken.”
To offer his congratulations, Mr Biden called him.
He tweeted: “Tonight Georgians stood up for democracy, rejected Ultra MAGAism and, most importantly, sent a good guy back to the Senate. Here’s to six years more.
American football legend, Mr. Walker, couldn’t overcome a series of negative allegations. These included claims that he had paid for the abortions of two girlfriends.
He was a multimillionaire businessman who exaggerated his philanthropic activities as well as his business achievements. For example, he claimed that his company employed hundreds of people and generated tens of million dollars annually. However, records show that he only had eight employees and earned an average of $1.5m (PS1.2m) per year.
Although he claimed he was a law enforcement officer, he also said he was a college graduate.
Trump endorsed his Senate run.
Mr Warnock was the first state senator of color to be black. He promoted his Senate achievements, including a provision that he sponsored to limit insulin costs for low-income patients and deals on infrastructure.
Chuck Schumer, Senate majority leader, said that Mr Warnock’s victory was “against MAGA Republican extremeist policies”.
The bitterness of the final weeks of the election period was growing. Walker called Mr Warnock, the senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta (Georgia’s capital), a “hypocrite”, and a servile to President Joe Biden.
Although a Democrat Mr Warnock tried to distance himself from Senator Biden, whose approval ratings are low as inflation in the US continues to rise.
Although the Democrats’ outright majority in Senate does not guarantee a unified government as Republicans have narrowly won control of the House in recent midterms; however, it does mean that they will continue to control powerful committees.
