According to the governor of the region, a group of people attempted to steal a Banksy wall from a war-scarred wall in Ukraine.
They were able to cut off a section from plaster and board that had the image of a woman wearing a gas mask and dressing dress holding a fire extinguisher.
They were however spotted near Kyiv at the scene and the mural was retrieved. Oleksiy Kuleba stated in a statement.
He said that the image was intact and that the police were protecting the image.
He said, “These images are symbols of our struggle to defeat the enemy…we’ll do everything we can to preserve these works street art as a symbol for our victory.”
Police shared photos of Hostomel’s yellow wall, which had a large section cut back to brickwork.
According to them, several people were taken into custody at the scene.
Banksy confirmed that he had painted the mural, along with six others, last month in areas that had been particularly hard hit by fighting since Russia invaded Ukraine in February.
One depicts a female gymnast standing on a broken building. Another shows a man looking like Russian President Vladimir Putin being flipped during a judo match. A third shows two children using a metal trap as a seesaw.
Banksy’s artwork can fetch millions of pounds on an art market.
