The football star had a tumour removed from his colon in September 2021 and has since been in and out hospital for treatment on an ongoing basis.
ESPN reports that the 82 year-old was admitted to Albert Einstein Hospital, Sao Paulo, with “general swelling” as well as cardiac problems.
Doctors were worried that chemotherapy was not producing the desired results.

Pele is undoubtedly the greatest footballer of all-time.
As a 17-year old, he burst onto the international scene at the 1958 World Cup. He helped Brazil achieve their first record five victories.
Pele was injured and his contribution to the 1966 and 1962 finals were limited. However, he led Brazil to its third victory in Mexico in 1970, as part of what is widely considered to be the greatest international team ever.
Brazil‘s top scorer with 77 goals in his country’s 92 matches, he represented the ideal of football being “the beautiful sport”, one that is played with speed, skill and imagination.
The number of goals he scored throughout his career is disputed by many. Guinness World Records says 1,279.
Critics believe this figure is too high due to the hundreds of points scored in practice matches and friendlies.
These were just a few of the many goals he scored in his 22-year-long career.
Some others put his total at 757 goals. However, his main club Santos says that his total was closer to 1,000.
He was presented with the FIFA Ballon d’Or Prix d’Honneur in 2013 as an honor for his achievements and career.
