Riots broke out in Brussels following the shock victory by Morocco of 2-0 in a World Cup match in Qatar.
As they attempted to disperse people, police had to close off certain areas of Brussels.
To stop dozens of rioters, officers used water cannons and fired teargas.
According to Ilse Van der Keere, a Brussels police spokesperson, cars were bombarded with bricks and steps set on fire. One person sustained facial injuries.
Philippe Close, mayor of Brussels, advised football fans to avoid the city center and stated that authorities were trying to maintain order in the streets.
Police orders required that tram and subway traffic be stopped.
The win for the North African side was a huge upset at the World Cup, and was celebrated in many Belgian cities by Moroccan immigrants.
In the 73rd minute, Romain Saiss from Morocco put the side ahead. Zakaria Aboukhlal won the match in stoppage time.
This means that Belgium will likely need to beat Croatia in their last group match to reach the knockout stages.
It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were held during the disturbances at Brussels.
