After a devastating landslide on a small island in southern Italy, the body of a young girl was pulled out of the mud.
According to the Naples prefect’s office, at least three people were killed and approximately 10 others are missing from the resort island Ischia.
According to Corriere della Sera, the girl is five years old. Her parents are still missing.
Rescuers had previously found the body of a 31 year-old woman in the mud. Her partner is still missing.
Giacomo Pascale (the mayor of the town on the island) said that “we are continuing the search with broken hearts because among the missing is also minors.”
More than 150 people were left homeless.
A massive landslide that occurred Saturday morning swept away parked cars and destroyed buildings.
Claudio Palomba (prefect of Naples) said that around 100 people who live near the landslide area were evacuated.
Rescuers are digging through seven meters of mud and debris to find potential victims. The extent of the damage done to the tourist area in the Gulf of Naples by the lack of rain and light on Sunday has been revealed.
Images showed thick mud and debris across Casamicciola Terme – the most severely affected community on the island. Many cars were submerged at the shoreline after being pushed into water by the storm.
One video shows a man covered in mud, chest-deep, clutching at the shutter.
Officials say that the island, which is densely populated, received almost five inches of rain in just six hours. This was the highest rainfall in 20 years.
Initial confusion was about the number of deaths.
Matteo Salvini, Deputy Premier, initially stated that eight people had been confirmed dead. However, the interior minister later said that no deaths were confirmed and that 10 to 12 people were still missing.
On Saturday, the body of the woman, identified locally as Eleonora Sirabella, 31, was found.
