Man wanted in connection with Essex lorry deaths to appear in court today

This morning, a man is being sought in connection to the deaths of 39 victims found in an Essex lorry’s back.

Marius Mihai Draghici is suspected to be part of a conspiracy that resulted in the deaths of Vietnamese nationals. Their bodies were found in a lorry container on 23 Oct 2019.

Police in Romania detained the 49-year old in August. He was then extradited to Britain.

This follows the execution a European Arrest Warrant.

He is currently in custody at Essex Police and has been charged on 39 counts of manslaughter as well as conspiracy to aid unlawful immigration. He will appear in Chelmsford Magistrates Court on Saturday, 29 October.

These charges were filed one week after the third anniversary.

After the migrants paid more than PS10,000 each for their journey to England, the temperature inside the container reached 38.5C (101.3F).

The lorry had traveled from Zeebrugge, Belgium to the Port of Purfleet, Essex.
