Hero dogs who helped fight terror honoured with memorial

A memorial has been established to honor the hero dogs that helped defeat extremism and find terror suspects.

The monument was unveiled on Thursday in Suippes in northeastern France in tribute to rescue dogs who have helped soldiers, police, and rescue teams across Europe for over a century.

The memorial features a sculpture of a First World War soldier with his dog, huddled together in a French-Colombian art Milthon. It reflects all the “civilian” and “military hero dogs.

It is located in front of Suippes’ town hall, which was witness to major conflicts during World War II.

This town also houses the largest military kennel Europe. Here, members of the 132nd infant canine regiment French army train their dogs for service.

This regiment includes 650 soldiers and 550 dogs. Some of them attended the memorial’s induction.

Diesel, a police canine who was killed in a raid against the mastermind behind the Paris attacks, as well as Leuk, a Mali extremist’s dog that died in 2019, were honored in the ceremony.

Johan, a police officer, stated that it was very important to recognize dogs because they, too, perform missions just like humans. However, we don’t ask for their opinions.

“So, to me it’s fair that they get back a medal.”

Other dogs are trained to detect drugs and explosives. They can be deployed in France and on national missions.

After being registered at 18 months of age, each dog is assigned a soldier. However, some dogs are recruited as puppies.

Many dogs come from France, Germany, the Netherlands and other Eastern European countries.

They go through a series test, with courage being the most important quality. When they are unable to fulfill their duties, they are retired.
