American Idol runner up Willie Spence was killed in a crash in the US.

According to a report by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and the Marion County Medical Examiner, the 23-year old singer died after his Jeep Cherokee left the road and collided with a tractor-trailer.

Spence, a Georgian, was second to Chayce Bettham in season 19 of American Idol.

According to the report, both Spence and the tractor-trailer driver, who are both 68 years old were wearing seatbelts.

Barbara O’Neal, Marion County’s medical examiner, stated that Spence died at the scene of the accident on Tuesday.

Tennessee Highway Patrol spokesperson said that the agency is investigating the reason Spence’s car went off the road.

Spence was praised by the singing competition show for his “true talent” and lit up all rooms he entered.

The statement stated: “We are devastated by the passing of our loved American Idol family members, Willie Spence.”

“We send our condolences and sympathies to his family.”

Alyssa Wray, a fellow American Idol star, posted on Instagram that she was “so heartbroken” and described Spence’s “soul that people were attracted to”.

Spence’s journey began with an audition performance by Rihanna of Diamonds, and he auditioned in front of Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan.

Spence uploaded a video of him singing You Are My Hiding Place hours before the crash. His latest post was accompanied by tributes from many people.

According to his Instagram post, Spence was scheduled to perform in London next year.
