Last member of uncontacted Amazon tribe dies in Brazil

The last member of an Amazon tribe that has not been contacted in Brazil has passed away.

According to Survival International, the indigenous man was known as “The Man of the Hole” and had been living in Brazil’s Rondonia state in complete isolation for 26 years.

He was believed to have been around 60 years of age and was known for digging deep into the ground to trap animals or hide from them.

On Tuesday, a FUNAI official discovered his body dead in a hammock just outside his straw hut.

There was no sign of violence or struggle.

FUNAI stated that the man died from natural causes. His body will be examined by federal police for forensic evidence.

From the 1970s, his tribe was subject to a series attacks by cattle ranchers looking to expand their land.

Fiona Watson (research and advocacy director at Survival International), commented on the news that he had died: “No one outsider knew his name or his tribe. And with his death, the genocide against his people is complete.”

“For this was indeed genocide – the intentional wiping out an entire population by cattle ranchers, hungry for land or wealth.”

She said, “He symbolized both the horrific violence and cruelty inflicted upon indigenous peoples around the world in the name colonization and profit, as well as their resistance.”

We can only imagine the horrors he saw in his life and the isolation of his existence after his tribe was killed. But he refused to make contact with anyone and made it clear that he wanted to be alone.

FUNAI released footage of an unknown man hacking at a tree using an axe in 2018.

Survival International stated that his abandoned campsites proved he had planted crops like bananas, papaya, and corn and built his homes of straw and thatch.
