‘We’d rather be nuked than be part of Russia’

It has been almost six months since Russia invaded Ukraine.

The conflict has left at least 12,000,000 Ukrainians homeless, while large parts of the east- and south-east of the country are devastated.

Seva, a frontline volunteer, said that he and many other countrymen and women are committed to the war, even if it means paying the ultimate price.

“Everyone is tired war, but I would say 99.9% understand that peaceful negotiations with Russia are impossible. It’s only war, war ’til death.

“I spoke to many people, and they said that we didn’t want live in occupied territories. We don’t want live in the new so-called Russia.”

Seva claims that most people he talks to don’t want “new, so called Russia”.

“We don’t care if you’re talking about nuclear attacks,” many people will say when you mention them. Let them bomb us. We don’t want Russians to kill us.

“So, maybe they are emotional words. But on the other hand, I don’t want anyone to be Ukrainian. I want to live in Ukraine and not in a Russian province.

Seva and Oksana, his wife, and Ilyas, an IT specialist, have been recording audio diaries about their experiences in a war-torn country since the Russian invasion.

Each person is asked the same question in the latest installment of Ukraine War Diaries: What now?

Seva replies, “Everything is changing.” “Our life is not a long-term plan.

“All we can do is plan for one week because we don’t know what tomorrow will bring.

“All the money we spend together is to support our army and the guys we know… that’s the main reason we still work.”
