Kim Jong Un, North Korean leader, has declared victory over COVID-19. His sister however has admitted that he had “a fever” during this outbreak.
North Koreahas acknowledged that an Omicron virus outbreak had occurred in May. It has reported approximately 4.8 million cases of “fever” among its 26 million population. However, only a small fraction of these have been identified as COVID-19 .
The outbreak is now slowing down for several weeks, and only 74 people have been confirmed to have died.
Kim is now reportedly ordering that preventive measures be relaxed – only three months after acknowledging that there were cases.
On Thursday, the North’s official Korean Central News Agency, KCNA, reported that Kim Yo Jong’s sister had complained of a “fever” and blamed the North Korean epidemic on leaflets that were flown from South Korea.
The Unification Ministry of South Korea, which deals with inter-Korean affairs issued a statement regretting the North’s “extremely disrespectful, threatening comments”, which were based on “ridiculous allegations” about its source.
According to KCNA Kim made the following speech to the nation: “Since May, daily fever cases that had reached hundreds of thousands in the early days of the epidemic were decreased to below 90,000. A month later, and have continued to decrease. Since 29 July, there has not been a single fever case suspected to be connected to the virus.
‘Virus-free zone’
He said, “For a nation that has not yet administered a single vaccine shot to its citizens, our ability to overcome the spread of the disease in such a short time and recover safety in public healthcare and make our country a virus-free zone again is an incredible miracle that would be recorded in world history of public health.”

‘A farce’
Kim Yo Jong described the country’s viral crisis as a “hysteric farce” that was triggered by South Korea in order to escalate tensions.
She said her brother had been suffering from fever and thanked him for his “energetic, meticulous guidance” in bringing about an “epochmaking miracle” in fighting COVID-19.
“Puppets from South Korea are still bringing leaflets and other dirty items into our territory. She said, “We must fight it hard.”
