Donald Trump says he refused to answer questions in New York investigation

Donald Trump said that he invoked Fifth Amendment and refused to answer questions under oath during the ongoing New York civil investigation into business dealings.

In a motorcade, the former US President arrived at Letitia James’ office in New York shortly before 9 AM on Wednesday.

He said that he had “refused to answer questions under the rights, privileges and afforded every citizen under the United States Constitution” more than an hour later.

Any statements he made during the deposition could have been used against his in a criminal case.

Although Ms. James’ probe is civil, the Manhattan District Attorney is conducting a parallel criminal investigation.

The fifth amendment protects the right of a person not to be “compelled” to testify against him in a criminal case.

This means that criminal defendants don’t have to provide damning evidence in their cases.

The FBI raided Trump’s estate

Experts say that Mr Trump’s vocal defense of himself on the rally stage and in written statements could have backfired because any information he said could be used in criminal investigations.

He made his decision just days after FBI agents searched Mar-a-Lago in Florida as part a unrelated federal probe into whether he had taken classified records from the White House.

Ms. James is leading the civil investigation. It involves allegations that Trump’s company, The Trump Organisation, misrepresented the value of valuable assets such as skyscrapers and golf courses, misleading tax authorities and lenders, and even misleading tax authorities.
