Pearl Jam cancel gig after frontman’s throat damaged by wildfires

Due to the damage to Eddie Vedder’s throat, Pearl Jam cancelled a concert in Vienna.

The news was shared on social media by the rock band just hours before their scheduled performance. They called it “brutal news” and “horrible timing”.

On Sunday 17 July, the five-member band performed an outdoor gig at Lollapalooza in Paris. The lead singer, aged 57 years old, was injured by the flames in the southwest France.

Since the wildfires started on 12 July, more than 31,000 people were forced from their homes and summer vacation spots in Gironde. Swirling hot winds have also hampered firefighting efforts.

Many evacuated from French wildfires

The band posted three parts on Twitter: “To all who were anticipating great Pearl Jam shows tonight in Vienna, they were also.” Our singer Ed Vedder was unfortunately left with a severe throat injury due to extreme conditions at the last outdoor venue outside of Paris (heat dust and smoke from the fires).

“He has been to the doctors and received treatment, but his vocal chords are still not fully recovered.

“This is terrible news and terrible timing…for all involved.”

“Those who put in so much effort to put on the shows are just as valuable as those who devote their time and energy to attend them…

“As a group, we are deeply sorry. We have tried to find alternatives to continue playing. Ed is keen to play. There is no throat at the moment…

“So very, very deeply sorry.”
