Liverpool fans unfairly blamed for Champions League final unrest, report finds

A report found that it was unfair to attribute unrest in Paris to Liverpool fans, as the state authorities had failed to manage crowds.

Gerald Darmanin, France’s interior minister pointed fingers at Liverpool fans in an attempt to distract attention from police and organizers failings, according to a report by the French Senate.

The unrest was caused by a “chaine of events and malfunctions” that occurred in the hours and days leading up to kickoff.

It added that it was unfair to want to hold Liverpool supporters responsible for the disturbances that took place. The minister of the interior tried to distract attention from the state’s inability to manage the crowds and stop the actions of hundreds of violent and coordinated offenders.

It stated that UEFA’s management system for ticketing was “unsuitable”. Stewards were not given adequate training and quickly became overwhelmed.

There were also “major deficiencies in the intelligence (and) transport routes of supporters” as well as “insufficient communication”.

The match started more than an hour late on 28 May.

Sky News later learned that there was a “massive bottleneck” when Liverpool fans were funnelled through a narrow gap, and tear gas was used to clear an area with 20,000 Reds supporters.

The report stated that UEFA did not have a system in place to detect forgeries.

It was able to identify 2,471 fake tickets from the French Federation. 1,644 were found in the stadium’s southern section, which is dedicated to Liverpool fans.

It was also stated that checkpoints were blocked after a decision to conduct an initial check of ticket validity at prescreening security points.

The Senate recommended that future events of similar importance be given tamperproof tickets.

It called for better coordination between police and stewards.
