Number of migrants found dead inside truck in Texas rises

Mexico’s foreign minister said that 50 migrants were killed in a Texas truck.

Marcelo Ebrard posted on Twitter that 22 Mexicans, seven Guatemalans, and two Hondurans were among those who died.

Charles Hood, San Antonio fire chief, stated that the bodies were found in a truck without air conditioning or water. They were also “hot to touch” when temperatures reached 38C.

Officials stated that “stacks” of bodies were found in the vehicle. They were located near railway tracks in an isolated area on the city’s southern fringes. This was after a worker heard the truck’s cry for help just before 6pm Monday.

The San Antonio Fire Department stated that 16 other people were also found in the trailer. Fourteen of them were minors. However, no children were among those who died.

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations division is conducting a criminal investigation into an “alleged human smuggling incident”. This includes local police.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott posted that “these deaths were on Biden” and added: “They are due to his deadly open borders policies.”

Texas: More

The Trump administration introduced a rule in March 2020 to deny migrants, mainly from Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador, the right to seek asylum. This was kept by Joe Biden, the current President.

It is believed to encourage border crossings again because there are no legal penalties for being caught.

Texas lorry deaths ‘unfortunate’

People who illegally cross the border have been expelled over two million times since the law was passed.

Biden reversed some of his predecessors’ immigration policies, including stopping construction of the wall at the border and reaffirming protections to some migrants.

Beto O’Rourke (Democratic candidate running against Abbott) called for urgent action “to dismantle human trafficking rings and replace them by expanded avenues of legal migration”.

South Texas has been the most popular area for illegal border crossings for a long time.

The border patrol checks allow migrants to ride in their vehicles to San Antonio, which is the nearest major city. From there, they are free to disperse throughout the United States.

A record number of undocumented migrants from Mexico were detained in May as they tried to enter the country illegally.

This latest tragedy is one of the most tragic that has claimed the lives of thousands of people trying to cross the US-Mexico border.

Ten migrants were killed in 2017, after they got trapped in a truck that was parked at a Walmart San Antonio.

The bodies of 19 migrants were discovered in 2003 in a truck south of San Antonio.
