World's largest recorded freshwater fish caught in Cambodia

Scientists have confirmed that a giant stingray captured in the Mekong River, Cambodia, is the largest freshwater fish ever recorded.

According to Wonders of the Mekong (a joint US-Chilean research project), the stingray measured nearly four metres (13 feet) from tail to snout and weighed in at just under 300 kg (661 lb).

A local fisherman caught it south of Stung Treng, in the northeast. It was nicknamed “Boramy”, which means “full moon”, because of its round shape.

A nearby team of scientists from Wonders of the Mekong was alerted by the fisherman.

According to the group, the previous record for freshwater fish was a 293kg (646lb), Mekong giant catfish that was found in Thailand in 2005.

“When you see a fish that big, especially in freshwater it is difficult to understand,” Wonders of the Mekong leader ZebHogan stated.

Hogan said that fish can still grow to this size despite environmental challenges.

The team attached a tag device to the tail of the fish. This will transmit tracking information over the next year and provide data about giant stingray behavior in Cambodia.

The record-breaking fisherman was paid at market rate. This means that he received approximately $600.

The Mekong River flows through China, Myanmar Laos Thailand Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Thailand.

This area is home to many species of huge freshwater fish, but scientists are increasingly concerned about the impact of a large dam-building programme in recent years on spawning grounds.

According to freshwater fish, those fish that live in freshwater are those that have a continuous life. This is different from giant marine species like bluefin tuna or marlin.

Researchers claim it’s the fourth giant Stingray to be reported in the same area over the past two-months, all of which were females.

This could be a hotspot for the species to spawn.
