Bridges to Severodonetsk impassable as Russia moves closer to taking control of important city

All bridges leading to Severodonetsk in Ukraine are now closed. This makes it difficult to transport civilians and humanitarian aid.

Serhiy Haidai (the governor of the Luhansk regional, which includes Severodonetsk) stated that Russians had destroyed two bridges linking the city to Lysychansk and that the third was unsafe and outdated.

Mr Haidai stated that it is impossible to drive into the city to deliver anything to the city.

“Evacuation cannot be achieved.”

Lysychansk, the other Luhansk city not under Russian control, is being bombarded regularly by Russian forces.

Eduard Basurin is a Russian-backed separatist from Donetsk. He said Monday that Severodonetsk was blocked and that Ukrainian fighters are forced to surrender.

Haidai denied that this was a “lie”, but added: “There’s no threat of our troops getting encircled within the Luhansk area.”

Russia invaded Ukraine 24 February, but it failed to advance as fast as expected. It abandoned efforts to seize the capital Kyiv, and shifted its attention to the Donbas, where Moscow-backed separatists hold territory since 2014.

Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson, stated Monday that Russia’s primary goal is to defend the Donetsk-Luhansk republics of the people, which are part of the Donbas region.

According to him, Russia’s RIA news agency reported that the primary goal of the special-military operation is “generally, the protection of republics.”
