Russia controls about 20% of Ukraine, Zelenskyy says as war enters its 100th day

As President Volodymyr Zilenskyy admitted that Russia controls around 20% of Ukraine, the war in Ukraine is now at its 100th day.

When Mr Zelenskyy spoke to the Luxembourg parliament, he stated that Russia controlled more territory than Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands combined. He also said that Russia had killed “tens of thousands” in the conflict so far.

He said, “This is what it actually means to describe this war as full-scale. This is why we are calling on the world for support.”

“All Europeans will continue to enjoy their freedom if we win this war.”

“But if one person who wants the destruction of any freedom in Ukraine or Europe prevails then dark times will come to everyone on that continent,” he said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russia, having failed to capture the Ukrainian capital Kyiv in the war, has been focusing its attention on the southeastern Donbas, which includes Donetsk (and Luhansk) and where it has been supporting separatist fighters ever since 2014.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, Donetsk governor, stated that three civilians had been killed and nine others were injured.

The strategically-important city of Severodonetsk in Luhansk is largely in ruins after days of intense fighting and, if that and the nearby city of Lysychansk fall, Russia will control all of the province.
