Ukraine reports 15,000 suspected war crimes – Russian ministers and propagandists among those accused

According to the chief prosecutor of Ukraine, more than 15,000 war crimes were reported in Ukraine since the Russian invasion.

Iryna Venediktova stated that more than 500 suspects were identified, including Russian ministers and military commanders.

Approximately 80 of them have been charged with criminal offenses.

Ms Venediktova stated at a news conference held in The Hague, that “about 200-300 war crime are committed each day.”

A few thousand war crimes are being reported from the eastern Donbas, where intense fighting is ongoing between Russian and Ukrainian troops.

Ms. Venediktova stated that even though Ukrainian authorities were not allowed to enter the Russian-held areas Donbas they were interviewing evacuees as well as prisoners of war.

According to Ms Venediktova, investigators are looking into claims that people were tortured or killed, and civil infrastructure was destroyed.

She said that there have been other allegations about Ukrainian adults and children being taken to Russia.

Russian soldiers convicted

Russian forces were previously accused of killing civilians at Bucha and in other Kyiv suburbs. They also attacked civilian infrastructure repeatedly, including hospitals and a Mariupol theatre that housed hundreds of civilians.

Two Russian soldiers were convicted by a Ukrainian court Tuesday of war crimes related to the shelling civilian buildings.

They were held for eleven-and-a half years.

Last week was the first time that a Russian soldier captured was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering a civilian.

Russia denies targeting civilians and participating in war crimes.

Ms Venediktova stated that Estonia, Latvia, and Slovakia had decided to join an international team investigating Ukraine that also includes Lithuania and Poland.

US will send more advanced rocket systems and other equipment to Ukraine

It occurs as civilians in Ukraine fear for their safety in the eastern region Luhansk. There, Russians are trying to seize control of Severodonetsk, one last city that remains under the control of Ukraine.

The US President Joe Biden reiterated his commitment to the country’s defense, announcing that he would send advanced rocket systems to help it defend itself as part of a $700m weapons package (PS556m). This package is expected to be revealed today.

According to Mr Biden, the US “moved quickly” to send Ukraine significant amounts of ammunition and weaponry so that it could fight on the battlefield and can be at the negotiation table.

He stressed that he doesn’t want to see a conflict between NATO and Russia.

He stated that despite his disagreement with Putin’s actions and his outrage, the US would not attempt to overthrow him in Moscow.
