World's 'most valuable car' sells for record fee

A 1955 Mercedes-Benz has been dubbed the “most valuable car” and sold for a record EUR135m. (PS114.4m).

This car is one of only two original 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupes in the Mercedes-Benz Classic Collection. It was sold to a private collector.

The auction proceeds will be used for the establishment of a global Mercedes Benz Fund, which will offer research and educational scholarships in environmental science and decarbonisation.

Rudolf Uhlenhaut was the car’s creator and chief engineer. The coupe was a “milestone”, with distinctive “gullwing doors”, which helped to shape Mercedes.

The auction was held at Germany’s Mercedes Benz museum with RM Sotheby’s, and was attended by a few collectors as well as Mercedes-Benz customers.

It was purchased by a private buyer and made available for public viewing “on special occasions”. The twin is still in the company’s ownership and will be displayed in Stuttgart.

Renata Jungo Brungger (a member of the board for Mercedes-Benz) stated, “As an international company and as luxury brands we bear a great deal of responsibility towards society.”
