Putin says Ukraine military action was necessary due to West 'preparing for invasion of our land'

Vladimir Putin claims that Russia’s military intervention against Ukraine was a preemptive move to ward away aggression. He accuses the West of “preparing the invasion of our country, including Crimea”.

Russian President led anniversary celebrations in Moscow for the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in 1945.

Russia’s Victory Day is an annual celebration. It is the country’s most important holiday. The parade of soldiers and military equipment through Red Square marks its significance.

The backdrop for this year’s spectacle with tanks, planes rockets and missiles is however, different.

Today’s celebrations kicked off with Sergei Shoigu, Russian defense minister, being driven around Red Square saluting troops.

Next, President Putin spoke up and informed his troops that they were fighting for Russia now.

He said, “You are fighting to protect our Donbas people, for the safety of our motherland and its future,”

He did not use the opportunity to declare war on Russia or mobilize the Russian military.

He said, “The death and loss of any soldier or officer is very painful for us.” “The state will do all it can to provide for these families.”

The speech was concluded by a rallying cry for the soldiers: “For Russia! For Victory!”

Why Putin’s speech was so ‘encouraging’

Sir Tony Brenton, ex-ambassador of the UK to Russia, suggested that the Russian leader’s performance could signal an end to the war.

Sky News’ top diplomat from Britain said that Mr Putin had shown “disturbing indications” that he was “losing it” recently. He said that his speech today was coherent and professional.

Sir Tony stated that he didn’t agree with the message, which sought to justify Russia’s invasion and hit out against NATO. However, he claimed it had “pushed all of the right patriotic buttons”.

He said, “It’s quite encouraging that it leaves us with the feeling that there is a rational individual there with whom hopefully it will be possible in time to make a sensible deal to end this mess.”
