Explosions heard as missiles hit the western Ukrainian city of Lviv

Lviv became a refuge for Ukrainians fleeing fighting in the last month.

In a matter of minutes, that sense of safety was destroyed.

As we were driving through the city, news broke that there were jets flying overhead.

The streets were ringing with the sound of the air raid siren moments later. The sound is now familiar, but it feels different this time.

Three loud explosions were heard very soon.

The city’s skyline was then covered by a thick cloud of black smoke.

Fire engines were racing towards the flames as police tried to push people away. A possible secondary attack was the biggest threat.

Another concern was that the fuel depot, which was on fire and was rapidly getting out of control, was also a major concern.

The atmosphere was intense and panicked, even military personnel. We saw several arrests. One man was being pushed about by officers.

They took his phone and started looking at it. It was not clear what he had done. There was suspicion that anyone who took pictures of the scene could have been helping the Russians.

The missiles crashed just short of the television tower in the city. It’s unclear if this was the intended target.

However, there was panic and paranoia. This information would be useful to the Russians if they attempt to strike again.

A second attack on the city was launched. As we were getting ready to go on the air, there was another explosion behind us.

The sky was lit up by three bright flashes. A cloud of smoke appeared. It was another hit, this time near the city’s outskirts. Later, we learned that rockets had landed at an industrial storage facility.

The first missiles that struck Lviv’s civilian population were not the first. This city has been a refuge for thousands of Ukrainians fleeing horrific events in other parts.

These strikes resulted in five people being injured, but it could have been much worse. The first strike took place in an area surrounded by apartment blocks and residential buildings.

This attack occurred just seconds before the US President spoke to the international community in Warsaw.

While Joe Biden was critiquing Russia and Vladimir Putin in his speech, Russian forces attacked a Polish city located just 40 miles from its border.

This is perhaps a signal to the West, but also a signal that Russia cannot be trusted in Ukraine.
