Russian court found Alexei Navalny, a Kremlin critic who was jailed, guilty of large-scale fraud. It said this on Tuesday.
Russian prosecutors want to transfer Navalny to a maximum-security penal colony for 13 year on contempt of court and fraud charges.
Mr Navalny was taken into custody in January 2021. He had returned from Germany, where he had been suffering from nerve agent poisoning. Russian authorities denied this accusation.
He is a vocal critic of President Putin and is currently serving a sentence of three-and-a half years for charges that he stole PS3.5m in donations to his political organizations, which he denies.
He was again charged with fraud last month in the maximum security prison east of Moscow, where he is currently being held.
Antony Blinken (US secretary of state) described the charges as doubtful.
Concerns were raised about Mr. Navalny’s health while in prison. There are reports that prison authorities refused to give him the correct medication and did not allow his doctor to visit him behind bars.
He has been in jail and has called on his fellow citizens to participate in daily protests.

This court’s decision comes after Russia passed new laws which could see people who spread fake information being jailed up to 15 years. Public calls for sanctions against Russia will be considered a crime.
These laws will give Russia more power to suppress information about the invasion of Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin refers to it as a “special military operations”.
In Russia, thousands of protestors have been detained in the last week for participating in demonstrations against the invasion in Ukraine.
