China’s cases of Coronavirus have tripled following a spike in infection in the northeast. As China fights its worst outbreak in two years, tighter restrictions have been placed on entry to Shanghai.
Bus services to the port city of eastern 24 million inhabitants have been suspended. Anyone wishing to enter must pass a negative COVID-19 exam.
On Sunday, the authorities reported 1,938 new cases of coronavirus on the Chinese mainland. This is more than three times the number reported the previous day.
Three-quarters of the 1,412 cases were found in Jilin, northeast. Entry to Changchun’s industrial city has been stopped. Families have been told to stay home.
After officials felt that an earlier response was not adequate, stricter measures were taken.
Zhang Yan, the deputy director of provincial health commission, stated that “the emergency response mechanism for some areas isn’t sound enough.”
The number of cases in Shanghai, China’s largest city, rose from 15 to 432.
The city government urged the public to stay unless it was absolutely necessary.
China has a relatively low number of infections, but authorities have adopted a “zero tolerance strategy” to quarantine all infected persons.
Hong Kong reported 15,789 daily cases to the local government, almost half of Saturday’s total.
Chief executive Carrie Lam warned that the recent infection surge may not have reached its peak.
According to a government notice, Cangzhou residents, which is a city with 7.3 million inhabitants, were also told to remain at home following nine reported cases.
831 cases of new cases were reported on the mainland in Changchun; 571 in Jilin, the provincial capital, and 150 in Qingdao, the eastern port city. 60 cases were reported in Shenzhen (a business hub located next to Hong Kong).
Figures released earlier this week showed 6 million people have died from coronavirus in the six years since the pandemic.
