Russia shells Mariupol mosque where 'dozens of people were sheltering' from fighting

According to the government of Ukraine, the Russian military shelled a mosque that shelters more than 80 people in Mariupol.

It tweeted, “The Russian invaders shelled the mosque of Sultan Suleiman The Magnificent and Roxolana (Hurrem Sultan), Mariupol.”

“More that 80 children and adults are hiding from the shelling, even citizens of Turkey,”

It didn’t say whether there were people who had been killed or injured.

According to the Ukrainian Embassy in Turkey, 86 Turkish nationals including 34 children sought refuge in the mosque.

Moscow denies targeting civilian areas during what it calls a special military operations in Ukraine.

Ukraine accused Russia of refusing people to leave Mariupol, which has been encircled by a blockade that has left hundreds of thousand of them trapped.

Russia accuses Ukraine of failing to evacuate its citizens.

Melitopol residents protest against mayor’s kidnap’

In the meantime, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, also accused Russia for kidnapping Melitopol’s mayor, a port town in the south of Ukraine.

He called the abduction “a new stage in terror”.

Before the invasion, US officials warned that Russia planned to kill and detain targeted Ukrainian citizens.

It is believed that Mr Zelenskyy is on the list.
