History made as first woman wins Australian Open on home soil for 44 years

Ashleigh Barty has made history by becoming the first Australian woman to win the year’s first Grand Slam in 44 years.

The world number one defeated Danielle Collins in the final, becoming the only active player other than Serena Williams to have won major titles on three different surfaces.

She was down 5-1 in the second set but recovered to clinch a 6-3 7-6 (2) victory.
